Wi-Fi Calling

by Robert Haviland

I go into a lot of schools working with the building’s WLAN. I do enjoy talking to the staff about why I’m there and what my goal is for the Wi-Fi. Not every time, but a lot of the time, someone will want to complain about their cell phone service. Some schools are built like atomic fallout shelters because they were built in the 1950s.

In this day, the term “Wi-Fi” is becoming synonymous with internet service on a device with no cable. Even on Reddit, when someone asks for Wi-Fi help, most of the time they mean their ISP. But in schools, they mean they can’t text or get calls on their cell phones.

Wi-Fi Calling is a service in which the cellular service provider can off-load calls over a WLAN to the LAN and eventually out to the internet. Most of the time, data and text can already go over the local WLAN.

When letting a staff member know about Wi-Fi Calling, I make sure to tell them to check with their provider. Also, not all WLAN administrators allow Wi-Fi Calling over their network. Most of the major providers offer this service for free and for good reason. they do not have to put in more towers to cover the schools.
