Host Name in Beacon Aerohive Classic

by Robert Haviland

In HiveOS 8.2 (at least) and further, we can now get the Hostname of the AP to be broadcast during Wi-Fi validation surveys (heatmaps). This makes creating reports from Ekahau so much easier. Wireshark has also been updated to filter out Aerohive specific frames with the hostname populated.

In Aerohive

To enable supplemental CLI commands in Hivemanager Classic, you must go to:
Home > Hivemanager Settings >Enable Supplemental CLI

Then you go to the devices you wish the command to reside and check mark them. Then click Modify from the above menu.

Go down to Advanced Settings > Supplemental CLI

Click the “+”

Name it something such as “HostNameInBeacon”

Type the command you want to go to all APs. In this case:
system hostname-in-beacon enable

Then save it.

Then choose it from the dropdown menu and Save

You MUST do a complete update for the command to take effect.

In Wireshark

You must be on version 3.0 or higher. I tested on version 2.6.4 and this did not work.

Capture some beacon frames with your favorite capture tool then open Wireshark. I recommend using AirTool.

In the filter, type wlan.vs.aerohive.hostname

This will only display frames with an Aerohive Hostname defined.
